The Tokina 1.6x Expander converts Super 35 lenses to cover Vista Vision and full frame sensors with a small light loss and focal length increase.
This adapter allows for the use of Super 35 lenses on modern larger sensors opening up some amazing opportunities to pair classic zoom lenses on cameras such as the Alexa Mini LF. Here is an example of adapting the Cooke 18-100mm Zoom onto the Mini LF which allows for a unique look and large zoom that might not be possible otherwise.
Constructed with seven elements in four groups, the 1.6X Expander features an aperture compensation of just 1.36 T-stops. Meaning that there will be a light loss of 1.36 stops when using the adapter and equivalent focal length will be increased by 1.6 times. The expander works best with lenses with T2.0 or larger apertures and when stopped down to T2.8 or less.
There is also a requirement that lens back flange cannot be greater than 21mm or it will not fit on the adapter. This means that not all Super 35 lenses are compatible and particularly very wide lenses tend to have a longer flange and may not fit. There is a flange length checking tool included with the expander.
