We have just received a new set of Blazar anamorphic lenses - the Blazar Mantis 1.33x full frame anamorphic PL (or EF) kit which includes the 35mm T2, 50mm T2 & 75mm T2. (And will be adding to this soon!) These lenses are an amazing option for an anamorphic look on a budget as they offer an amazing 2.0x look complete with the signature oval bokeh in a small, lightweight and affordable package.
So are they 1.33x or 2.0x squeeze anamorphics? The Mantis lenses have a 1.33x squeeze ratio which is more appropriate for using with cameras that cannot shoot open gate. However due to their consistent oval-shaped aperture, the Mantis lenses are designed to replicate the traditional aesthetics of a 2x anamorphic image, particularly the exaggerated oval-shaped bokeh and barrel distortion.
This highly sort after look can now be achieved in a more affordable package that is lightweight (ranging from 670g to 790g) and small enough to be balanced on light gimbals and the Ronin 4D.
The set of lenses also has a nice pleasing amber flare that adds to the anamorphic character without being overpowering or too difficult to control. The central sharpness of the lenses are quite good for this price range, but do fall away towards the corners as is expected with anamorphic lenses. However unlike most anamorphic lenses they have quite good minimum focus distances which is a big bonus. The Mantis lenses all have 80mm front diameters and 77mm filter threads.
Overall the Blazar Mantis lenses are a great option for anamorphics for all sizes of productions, but will be most useful for those needing an all rounder affordable option or compact and lightweight set up. Get in touch today to rent these great lenses!
